Clay Bar Treatment: What It Is and Why Your Paint Needs It
Clay bar removes contaminants regular washing can't. Learn when you need it and what happens if you skip it.
Even a freshly washed car has microscopic contaminants bonded to the clear coat. Clay bar treatment is the only way to remove them — and it makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
What clay bar removes
Industrial fallout, brake dust, tree sap mist, overspray, hard water spots, and rail dust all bond to your paint and can't be washed off. Run your hand over a freshly washed hood — if it feels rough, you have contamination.
Why it matters before waxing or coating
Wax and ceramic coatings bond to whatever is on the surface. Skip the clay step and you're sealing contaminants in for the next 2 years. Clay first, then protect.
How often
Most cars benefit from clay every 6–12 months. Cars parked under trees or near construction may need it more often.
Clay bar is included in every full detail we do. It's one of the most underrated steps in detailing and the reason properly detailed paint feels like glass.
